Research Spotlight: High Self-Esteem vs. Narcissism

Self-esteem and narcissistic traits are often used interchangeably but this is not correct. High self-esteem is a stable sense of self-worth developed from warmth and a realistic, positive regard from others. Narcissism is caused by overvaluation and requires constant approval to satisfy its demands. Where self-esteem is internally focused, narcissism demands external validation, often at the expense of others.
