If you frequent Kepong, you would notice that there are many bak kut teh restaurants with the same Chinese name – 兴记. This is not a coincidence because they are opened by the disciples of the same master who taught them the recipe. That also explains why their bak kut teh and supplementary dishes are so similar to each other.
Recently we went back to the Heng Kee at Bandar Menjalara and were disappointed to learn that their bak kut teh had taken a dive. I wouldn't say it was bad, but certainly not as nice as we remembered. If you are keen to know how 兴记's bak kut teh is supposed to taste like, check out Heng Kee F.T. Bak Kut Teh at Kepong Commercial Park.

There are only a handful of dishes available Heng Kee F.T., which we don't mind because we care about quality more than quantity. Apart from bak kut teh (soup only), your other choices are limited to yellow wine chicken and braised pork. We had a single portion of bak kut teh with spareribs (加厚骨) @ RM14 and a portion of braised pork knuckle (卤猪脚弯) @ RM14.

Even though there were only 4 pieces of them, the spareribs were meaty with little to no bone. The thin layer of fat on top and in between the meat made for a juicy bite.

The braised pork here is a must try and the fattier parts such as the knuckle are recommended for the best experience. There's nothing quite as satisfying as biting into soft and bouncy skin, followed by tender meat and fat that melts away in your mouth. The rich sauce was delicious too, the best stuff to mix into rice and enjoy.

Unfortunately, a few of the better bak kut teh places in Kepong like Lim Kee, Kai Tian Ji and Ah Foong have either closed or replaced by new restaurants.
Besides Shang Pim, Heng Kee F.T. is the other bak kut teh restaurant that I would recommend in Kepong for still being able to maintain their food quality.
