Bubu Grill Seafood @ Bandar Menjalara, Kepong

Bubu Grill Seafood is a restaurant that you will miss if you are not looking for it. It does not enjoy the most strategic location in town, as it's hidden from the main road and literally facing a construction site. But for seafood lovers in Kepong who appreciate freshness, Bubu Grill Seafood is worth knowing.

There's no menu here and the dishes you can order highly depend on the seafood stock as they get it. The idea is to walk up to the fishing boat where all the seafood is being displayed and decide which you wish to have in your meal.
Everything is priced by weight and they are shown clearly. Then, pick the cooking methods available such as grill or steam with sauces or ginger and wine. The friendly boss will make recommendations according to your preferences.

‘Siham' is signature item here and they constantly have promotion for it. During our visit, a basket shown above is only RM4.90 and it comes with the standard dipping sauces mixed with chilli and crushed peanuts. We were told that they sourced the cockles from Taiping and the quality is better than those you get in fried noodles.

Clams are also a must have here. We had them steamed with Chinese wine and ginger (500gm, RM20) which is quite similar to ‘xiong tong la la' but not as soupy.

Sotong was stir fried with sambal (380gm, RM32) and it was cooked perfectly and went extremely well with rice. However, we would much prefer if there was more sauce to coat the squid with.

For fish we played safe and had the common stingray (500gm, RM42.50) which was prepared ‘ikan bakar' style. It was superbly fresh, tender and fleshy enough to go around for more than 4 people.

The last dish was a special treat by the boss (maybe because he saw I was taking photos) and it was a Thai style grilled freshwater prawn.
The prawn head was full of creamy golden roe and how the Thais would eat it is to take a piece of the prawn flesh and dip it into the roe. Seriously good stuff and we enjoyed it thoroughly.

Lastly, I just want to clarify that my visit to Bubu Grill Seafood was about 3 months ago. Recently, the restaurant has advertised in Facebook resulting in a sudden surge of new customers.
Because of that, there have been some complaints about their service which you can read about on their FB page – so your experience may vary.
