It really goes without saying that Social media is a powerful tool. You have to do the work to get your business noticed and stick to a plan in accomplishing your goals. Make sure you're easy to find
It's best to choose a Twitter name that is close to your business name. Have a clear profile that explains what you do which also includes your URL. Use keywords to help people who are searching for your expertise be able to find you. Take advantage of Twitter's advertising platform.
Don't shout
Avoid using all caps as it is considered shouting. Always check for grammar and spelling. It is important to maintain professionalism on Twitter.
Provide helpful information
Tweet beneficial information that can help your followers. Tell people about upcoming events, new products, etc. Tweet behind the scenes business work, share photos, quotes, and intriguing news. Invite your Twitter followers to get to know who you are.
Be creative
Don’t tweet the same thing every day. Try not to be boring. Instead, try to be creative and unique in your tweets. Your goal is to get re-tweets whenever you can. Re-tweets exposes you and your business. Make sure your tweets contain an expression of value, entertainment, and urgency.
Have conversations
Conversations are a two-way street. Twitter is a great place for asking your customers what they like. Do they have a favorite author? What type of movies do they like? These are just examples. Your questions will obviously be associated with your type of niche. Get into conversations, and you might find out valuable information for your business that your followers are seeking.
Avoid aggressiveness
Stay away from coming across as aggressive. Although, Twitter is a conversation, whatever you say can come back and bite you in the butt. Don’t say anything you wouldn’t want to be reported in the local paper that will get you in hot water so to speak. Stay cool!
Community engagement
Engage with your followers. Become a friendly face and not an anonymous business. Twitter isn't just about self-promotion. Aim for about half of your tweets to be non-self promotional. Build bonds by giving a fuller picture of who you are as a person behind your business. Share interesting articles, awesome quotes, and catch up with others in your same field.
You should also re-tweet interesting tweets by others to support them. Use short links like http://bit.ly/ so your posts can be re-tweeted easily. Ask yourself what type of 'voice' you want your tweets to have based on your business niche. Aim for a consistent tone and your followers will get to know you better.
Use hashtags
Hashtags (#) are powerful and can help you engage with your target audience; plus increase your brand awareness. It is basically a keyword and/or phrase that makes the content of your post accessible to all people with similar interests. Even if they’re not your followers or fans, hashtags can increase your following. It's best to use a minimum of 3 hashtags per tweet so that it won't appear as spam.
Keep auto-tweet or auto-direct message at a bare minimum
Many of us use auto-tweets and auto-direct messages on our Twitter accounts. I'm guilty of that myself. However, try and keep those at a minimum. It's best to always engage live with your followers. Only use auto when deemed necessary.
