A Beginner’s Guide to Running Gear

Wondering where to start?

As a beginner, having a plan to stick to can really help to keep you motivated. Couch-to-5k (C25K) podcasts, apps and programmes are a firm favourite with Running novices. Backed by the NHS, all you need is enough willpower to get your feet moving and a realistic timeframe of nine weeks. You’ll have a choice of coaches and celebrities to help spur you on as you tackle a combination of brisk walks and running bursts, with programmes asking you to complete just three runs a week, taking a recovery day in between. As the weeks roll by, your runs gradually intensify until, before you know it, you’re running 5km in 30 minutes without even stopping.

Essential running gear

When you’re starting out, you need to stay hydrated just as much as a seasoned runner does. Taking along an insulated water bottle will keep your water cool. Or you might like to go for an ergonomic design that’ll feel more natural in your hand. Don’t fancy running while holding a water bottle? Why not get a specialist running backpack with a built-in water pocket? And whether you’re listening along to a programme (like C25K) or simply want some musical motivation, headphones are a must. Pairs designed for sport are sweat-proof, secure and have long battery life. If your jogging gear doesn’t have pockets, then an armband to keep your phone in can make a great investment.

Running shoes

Running is perhaps one of the cheapest sports to take up. In theory, all you need are comfortable, non-restrictive clothes and a pair of trainers. Nevertheless, having the right kit can help to make you feel the part. One thing that’s worth investing in is your Running Shoes. Look out for pairs without too much wear, as support is very important in running shoes and can get broken down over time. Check out men’s trainers or women’s trainers on Gumtree to find some bargains.

What to wear

When it comes to clothing, a simple cotton T-shirt, which has naturally breathable fibres, will do the trick. If you’re keen to try something more high-tech, check out dry-fit tops which have moisture-wicking properties that’ll take the sweat away from your skin for improved comfort. Running tights and leggings give an aerodynamic shape while offering support, and often feature mesh panels for improved ventilation too. Base layers and skin-tight thermals are also worth adding to your kit for when the colder weather hits.

Running community

Surrounding yourself with a group of enthusiastic runners can help with commitment and motivation. RunTogether has friendly and inclusive groups across the country for different skill levels, so you can find one that fits your timetable and ability in your area. Once you’re comfortable taking on 5k, why not join your local park run? These free, community-focused events happen around the world every Saturday morning at 9am in various parks and open spaces.

We’ve kitted you out with all you need to know about what to wear and how to find some running company. Now it’s ready, set, go to sports and leisure on Gumtree for your new Running Gear.
