Banana Po’e |Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Themed Dessert

Are you a fan of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D? I just got into the show and just finished watching the first season on Netflix. Such a great show! Great plot lines and I love how the show ties in perfectly with the Marvel movies! Since I am still going through the seasons, I wanted to have a Tahitian dessert to enjoy while watching the adventures of Agent Coulson. I found this Banana Po’e recipe and thought it would be perfect!  Tahiti, such a magical place.

Po’e (POH-eh) is a popular fruit pudding found at all traditional Tahitian barbecues. Originally the pudding was wrapped in banana leaves and baked in the fire pit.

Usually the dessert is topped with coconut cream and I included directions for that in the recipe down below, I opted for Tahitian Vanilla Bean gelato.

Fun Trivia about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

  • The actress that plays Melinda May, Ming-Na Wen,  also voices Mulan. She kicks butt all around!
  • S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. When originally created for the comic book in 1965, it stood for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division.
  • The character of Scorch is actually a mutant in the Marvel comics but since Fox Studios owns the rights to use the term mutants in Marvel properties, his status is alluded to slyly by using the slang terms used for mutants in the comics like “gifted” and “special”.
  • A number of episodes from the first season establish the origins of several long-running Marvel characters. Franklin Hall introduced in “The Asset” who becomes the super-villain, Graviton, and Donnie Gill in “Seeds” who becomes Blizzard, one of the foes of Iron Man. (trivia source IMDB)

Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: Tahitian
Serves: 6
Ingredients
  • butter or coconut oil, for greasing pan
  • about 7-8 ripe bananas, peeled and cut into chunks
  • ½ cup brown sugar (could also use palm sugar), plus extra for sprinkling
  • 1 cup cornstarch, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 can full fat coconut milk, unshaken and refrigerated for 2-3 hours
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 and butter or grease a 2-quart baking dish
  2. Place the banana in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. You should have four cups of banana puree. Pour into a large bowl and add the brown sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish and bake until firm/set.
  3. Remove from oven and let cool to room temperature. Place in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours, or until thoroughly chilled. Cut into cubes and place in a bowl. Remove the top from the coconut milk. Spoon the cream, which should have risen to the top, over the cubes of banana po'e. Sprinkle with a little extra brown sugar and serve.

VARIATIONS

  • Try substituting papaya, mango, pineapple or other tropical fruits for some of the bananas. Just make sure there is a total of 4 cups of fruit puree.  For juicier fruits, you will probably have to add more arrowroot or cornstarch.
