Earth, Wind & Fire, Linda Ronstadt Among Recording Academy’s 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award Honorees

Michael Putland/Getty ImagesEarth, Wind & Fire, Linda Ronstadt and Jefferson Airplane are among the artists the Recording Academy will present with Lifetime Achievement Awards this year in conjunction with the organization's annual Special Merit Awards. Other artists who are being honored for their career achievements include jazz keyboardist Herbie Hancock, rap group Run-DMC, late R&B singer Ruth Brown and the late "Queen of Salsa" Celia Cruz.

"Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees," says Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow. "Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come."

In previous years, the Special Merit Awards were presented at an event that coincided with Grammy Week, but in 2016 a special ceremony and concert celebrating the honorees will be held in the spring. The event also will feature the presentation of Trustees Awards to non-performers who have made significant contributions to the music industry. The 2016 honorees are late avant-garde composer John Cage, Nashville music entrepreneur Fred Foster and Chris Strachwitz, founder of the roots-music label Arhoolie Records.
