Janis Joplin Documentary Soundtrack Released Digitally Today; CD Version Due Out in March

Legacy RecordingsThe soundtrack to the acclaimed Janis Joplin documentary Janis: Little Girl Blue was released as a digital album today, February 12, though you'll have to wait until Friday, March 4 if you want it on CD. The 17-track collection features a mix of classic studio recordings and concert performances spanning the late singer's entire career, including rare live versions of her tunes.

Janis: Little Girl Blue includes a previously unreleased rendition of her hit "Piece of My Heart" that was recorded in April 1968 at a tribute concert for Martin Luther King Jr., held at the Generation Club in New York City. The song can be heard in the movie and also was featured in a 1991 short film titled "Comin' Home," but has never been available as an audio release.

The Janis: Little Girl Blue soundtrack also features the original studio versions of well-known Joplin songs like "Down on Me," "Summertime," "Maybe," and her posthumous chart-topping hit "Me and Bobby McGee," as well as live performances of "Cry Baby," "Tell Mama" and "Ball and Chain." The album includes songs Janis recorded as a solo artist, as a member of Big Brother & the Holding Company and with her backing groups The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band.

Janis: Little Girl Blue, which premiered September 2015 at Italy's Venice International Film Festival, was directed by Amy Berg, whose previous work includes West of Memphis and the Oscar-nominated Deliver Us from Evil. The movie takes a raw, uncensored look at the lauded singer's turbulent life, her path to stardom and her tragic death from a heroin overdose at age 27. It's narrated by veteran indie-rock singer/songwriter Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power, who reads passages from Joplin's personal letters to family, lovers and friends throughout the film.

The documentary also includes interviews with Joplin's family members, friends and fellow music stars, as well as previously unseen footage and archival scenes from Janis' appearances such landmark events as the Monterey Pop and Woodstock festivals.

An extended cut of Janis: Little Girl Blue is scheduled to get its broadcast premiere Tuesday, May 3, at 9 p.m. as part of the PBS series American Masters. That edition of the film will feature extra performance footage and new segments.
