Microsoft has officially announced starting June 26, "Windows 7 Upgrade Option" program allowing users to receive Windows 7 and PCs preinstalled with premium version of Windows Vista will qualify for a license equivalent of Windows 7.
Under the "Windows 7 Upgrade Option" program, the following Windows Vista version will have the following Windows 7 upgrade:

- Windows Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Home Premium
- Windows Vista Business -> Windows 7 Professional
- Windows Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate
- The is no charge provided to computer manufacturers from Microsoft but manufacturers may require a payment for costs such as shipping and handling.
- The program available through January 31, 2009.
- There is no "Upgrade Option" for Windows Vista Home Basic.
