US, UN condemn killing of Rohingya leader in Bangladesh

The United Nations (UN) and the United States (US) have condemned the killing of Rohingya refugee leader Mohibullah and called on Bangladesh authorities to investigate the case.

Mohibullah, an international representative of Rohingya refugees over the age of 40, was shot dead by unidentified men in a camp in Bangladesh late Wednesday night. The local police gave this information.
Mohibullah was shot dead by unidentified assailants at the Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhia in Cox's Bazar district of Bangladesh, said Naimul Haque, commander of the Armed Police Battalion in Cox's Bazar.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and it is not clear who is behind it.

Mohibullah was a teacher by profession who later became a refugee leader and spokesman representing Muslim local groups in international meetings. He had gone to the White House in 2019 for a meeting with then US President Donald Trump on religious freedom and they had discussed the plight of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
That same year, he was sharply criticized by the Bangladeshi media for leading a large rally of 200,000 refugees on the eve of the completion of two years of military operations in Myanmar. Due to military action in Myanmar
About 700,000 refugees, including Mohibullah, had to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. A human rights watchdog group called Mohibullah the vocal voice of the Rohingya community.

Human rights group Amnesty International called on the Bangladesh authorities and the United Nations refugee agency to work together to ensure the safety of all people in the camps, including refugees, activists and humanitarian workers.
Explain that more than 11 lakh Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have taken refuge in Bangladesh.
