K-Pop idols who died mysteriously after battling depression

While K-pop does appear to be all shimmery to fans and outsiders, it has also been beholding some of the darkest secrets of the entertainment world. Over the years, many K-pop idols have committed suicide.

All that glitters is not gold: the lives of K-pop idols are not as vibrant as their music videos. The Korean-popular culture has swept the world off its feet, emerging as a huge cultural force across the globe. So much so that not only Koreans, foreigners are also harbouring K-pop stardom dreams. While K-pop does appear to be all shimmery to fans and outsiders, it has also been beholding some of the darkest secrets of the entertainment world. Over the years, severe depression, mysterious deaths and suicide have emerged as the part and parcel of the K-pop world.  

The tragic deaths of K-pop idols 

Jonghyun (SHINhee)

Perhaps one of the most shocking incidents in the K-pop history, SHINee's lead singer, Jonghyun, died by suicide in his Seoul apartment.  The idol suffered from severe depression, as stated by the group's agency, SM Entertainment, and even his family.

Sulli [F(x)]

Choi Jin Ri, who went by her stage name Sulli, was a victim of cyber bullying. The bright singer was often criticized for voicing her opinion on issued related to national interests. She was both mentally and physically assaulted for her decision to leave the group. The online trolling took a major toll on her and she was found dead at her home on 14 October, 2019. 

Goo Hara

Sulli and Goo Hara were best friends. Just one month after Sulli's death, Goo Hara reportedly hanged herself to death. She was found dead at her home on 24 November. 

Woo Hye-Mi

Singer Woo Hye-Mi, 31, who went by the stage name Miwoo, was found dead in her apartment after she failed to appear to a meeting according to her agency, Downtown ENM. While the cause of her death was not revealed, k-netizens had pointed out the idol had shared hopeless post on SNS. 

Ahn So Jin

Aspiring K-pop idol  and reality-show contest Ahn So Jin died on February 24, 2015.  The singer was found unconscious near her apartment garden in South Korea's Daedeok District -- reportedly from jumping to her death from the 10th floor.
