DRDO successfully tests upgraded Akash missile ... Big boost to Indian Army

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully launched a new generation of Akash missile from the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan.

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully launched a new generation of Akash Missile from the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. 

The South Western Command of the Indian Army has shared this information on its official Twitter account.

The new generation missile is designed for use by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army to prevent high air threats. 

"The surface-to-air missile was successfully fired. The Akash-NG (new generation) missile will be used by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to intercept high-maneuvering low radar cross-section aerial threats. The missile interrupted the target during the test. This missile is capable of achieving multiple targets in real-time. The missile has an intercept range of 40 km, with the missile guidance system being more precise as well as the fire control system," a

n official source said.

"During the test, the performance of the missile's command and control systems, on-board avionics and aerodynamic configurations were successfully verified. Radar, EOTS and telemetry systems monitoring the missile's entire course during the test launch. Many range devices were used including,'' the DRDO official added.

The source said the missile was monitored during the test launch and flight data was captured by various range devices. The multi-function radar was tested for its ability to integrate with the system. The range of the missile ranges from 1.8 to 2.5 Mach. This missile can be fired from tanks that are stationary or also operated from surface warships and trucks.

“The Akash-NG system has been developed with better deployment compared to other similar systems. The missile has been completely designed by DRDO and is manufactured by Defense PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The test was launched by the joint team of DRDO and the Indian Army," 

the DRDO official said.
