Spinner Axar Patel captured four wickets and Ashwin took three wickets as England were all out for 205 on the first day of the fourth and final Test against India at the Motera Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
The hosts have Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara unbeaten. The duo will be aiming to create a continuous partnership on Day 2. India lost an early wicket, with James Anderson taking the wicket of Shubman Gill.
England reached 74/3 at lunch on the opening day after losing three fast wickets in the first session. Ben Stokes (55) and Daniel Lawrence (46) led the charge in the second and third sessions but Axar Patel (4/68) and Ravichandran Ashwin's (3/47) combined effort ended England's misery in their 76th over.
India managed to get two wickets after lunch break conceding just 70 runs, making it yet another dominating session for the hosts. After Stokes' dismissal, both Pope (21*) and Lawrence (15*)
For England, Ben Stokes was the leading scorer with 55 runs and Daniel Lawrence hits 46.
R Ashwin got better of Foakes as Ajinkya Rahane took the catch.
Ishant almost had Crawley second ball of the game. Kohli turned to Axar for the sixth over and the left-armer struck second ball - yet again knocking over a batsman with his straighter deliveries.
Crawley then threw his wicket away in Axar's next. Siraj got Root first ball after drinks. Siraj had a few close moments with Stokes and there were words exchanged between the sides. Stokes played out that phase and managed to find boundaries. Ashwin bowled just three overs as India were bowling with one seamer at one end.
