Anzac Day 2024: Mosman Collective’s essential guide to lower north shore events on April 25.

By ANNA USHER

Want to know what is happening in Mosman and North Sydney local government areas on ANZAC Day? We’ve got you covered with all the answers to your April 25 questions, plus a handy guide to what’s happening locally after the Dawn Service.

Dawn Services will be held in Mosman and North Sydney.

Is there a Dawn Service on the Lower North Shore?

Yes. Both Mosman and North Sydney hold a Dawn Service each year and both are very well attended. In Mosman, the event is held at Georges Heights Parade Ground at 5:30am sharp, followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at Frenchy’s Café. In North Sydney, head to the top of Walker St for a 5:45am service at the War Memorial, followed by bacon & egg rolls + coffee available to purchase at The Greens.

In Neutral Bay, there is a special service at 11am being held at the Neutral Bay Club on Westleigh St.

Where can I park?

This is the million-dollar question! Dawn Service attendees are advised to arrive early, but if you live within walking distance, please leave the car at home. In Mosman, Georges Heights Oval (a short walk from the Parade Ground) will be open for vehicles. In North Sydney, metered parking is available on nearby streets, plus a Council car park on Miller St.

Wreaths might contain laurel, a traditional symbol of honour, and rosemary, or they may be native or other flowers.

Will Rosemary be available at the Dawn Service?

Yes, but you should be prepared the day before! Rosemary is a traditional ANZAC Day emblem of remembrance.  A sprig of rosemary is pinned to a coat lapel or held in place by medals. Rosemary has particular significance as it grows wild on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

Is ANZAC Day a public holiday?

Yes, it is. Anzac Day this year falls on a Thursday and while Friday 26 April is not a public holiday, many will take a “long weekend”. For drivers in NSW, double demerits will apply from Wednesday 24 April to Sunday 28 April 2024.

If I can’t make the Dawn Service, can I watch it on TV?

The Sydney Dawn Service will be broadcast live on ABC TV, ABC NEWS channel, ABC iview and on the ABC listen app from 4.20am (AEST), followed by the Canberra Dawn Service at 5.30am.

ABC TV and ABC NEWS channel will broadcast the Gallipoli Dawn Service live from 12.30pm (AEST), the Villers-Bretonneux Dawn Service from 1.30pm (AEST) and the governor-general’s address from 6.55pm (AEST).

Two Up can legally be played only on Anzac Day, with many lower North Shore pubs offering games from lunch time.

Where can I play Two-Up on the lower north shore?

Just about everywhere! Anzac Day is the only day of the year where the game of Two Up can be played legally in clubs and hotels. In Mosman, head to The Buena and Mosman Rowers from midday, Warringah Bowls Club and Mosman RSL from 2pm. Other local pubs running games include The Oaks, The Greenwood, Rag and Famish, The Commodore, Crows Nest Hotel, Kirribilli Club and Norths in Cammeray.

Are the shops open on ANZAC Day?

Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important public holidays and as such, retailers are required to either delay their opening time or opt to stay closed, depending on which state you live in. Shops generally stay closed until 1pm on April 25, unless they are a small business (think Coffee Shops, Bakeries, Newsagents) who operate on Sunday trading hours.

  • Woolworths: All stores open from 1pm
  • Coles: All stores open from 1pm
  • Harris Farm: Open at 1pm
  • Aldi: Open from 1pm
  • IGA: Open from 1pm
  • Dan Murphy’s + BWS: Open from 1pm – closing early.
  • Liquorland: Open from 1pm – closing early
  • Kmart: Open at 1:30pm
  • Westfield: Centres open from 1pm with reduced trading hours
  • Bunnings: Open from 1pm
