Lower north shore motorists warned to prepare for long term Military Rd lane changes starting June 16.

By ANNA USHER

Local commuters face delays and traffic confusion when major road changes get underway this week as part of the Warringah Freeway upgrade project.

From Friday 16 June, the Military Road citybound bus lane will close on approach to the Warringah Freeway for up to 18 months, as work to build a new dedicated bus on ramp begins.

If you’re driving or catching a bus towards the city along Military Road, consider travelling before 7.15am or after 8.45am on weekdays, we’re told.

The shakeup means traffic travelling along Military Road and turning from Falcon Street onto the Warringah Freeway will be reduced from three lanes to two, with buses and general traffic merging.

The planned citybound bus on ramp, a separated raised bridge structure, has been designed to remove buses from citybound freeway lanes, Transport NSW said.

“It will remove buses from the citybound freeway lanes, improving travel times and safety for our customers by reducing the need for buses to weave across general traffic lanes,” a spokesperson told Mosman Collective.

City bound workers are advised to adjust their current weekday morning timetables for a less stressful trip into the CBD.

“If you’re driving or catching a bus towards the city along Military Road, consider travelling before 7.15am or after 8.45am on weekdays for a smoother commute,” the spokesperson said.

“Mondays and Fridays are less busy days on the transport network.”

Walkers and cyclists on Falcon St aren’t spared either, with the shared path on the southbound side (between Falcon and Merlin St) closed for the next 18 months.

“Pedestrians and cyclists will be required to detour an additional 700 metres.”

“If you’re driving citybound along Military Road, please stay alert and follow signs, we’re told, “you may also consider switching to public transport for a smoother trip.”

Transport NSW tells local drivers to stay alert and follow signs ahead of major road changes on June 16.
