Mosman Fire Station: Locals invited to go behind the scenes and meet a Fire Fighter at special Open Day.

By ANNA USHER

Lower north shore boys and girls will have the chance to meet a Fire Fighter and get behind the wheel of a fire engine this month.

On 13 May, the Mosman Fire Station will roll up its doors and invite the community to go behind the scenes for the annual Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Open Day.

Between 10 am and 2pm, Mosman and Neutral Bay firefighters will unlock their trucks, answer your questions, show you around, and help local families prepare their homes for a safe winter.

Station Officer Sam Wall tells Mosman Collective the day is also an opportunity to see demonstrations and learn about the importance of smoke alarms.

“The open day allows the public to tour the fire station while we get to provide a critical safety message in return,” he said.

“This year, our focus is on highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms.

“We see a 10 per cent increase in the number of home fires during the winter months, with more fires starting in bedrooms and loungerooms due to things like heaters and electric blankets,” Station Officer Wall said.

Mosman Fire Station is one of the oldest in NSW, with generations of the Field family serving the community.

He said homeowners and tenants must ensure smoke alarms are operational, with more fatalities in recent years due to deactivated devices.

“House fires in winter commonly happen from a faulty electric blanket or by placing clothes on top of a heater,” Station Officer Wall said.

“At the Open Day, we will also be educating people to create a family fire plan, where all kids and adults know what to do in the event of a fire emergency at home.”

The Open Day is also an opportunity to see demonstrations and learn about the importance of smoke alarms.

Station Officer Wall said any resident who would like FREE safety advice can also request an at-home visit from their local Fire Brigade.

“We are always happy to visit people at home and chat about the importance of fire safety at home,” he said.

“Working smoke alarms, a small extinguisher, and a fire blanket are essential for every household.

“Also, people should regularly clean the lint filter in clothes dryers and not overload power points.

“These little things can make a big difference when protecting your home from fire.”

The day is also a chance to create a family fire plan, so you know what to do in the event of a fire emergency.
