Chuck “Dr. Rush” Smith Sets Up New Practice With Ravens

Chuck Smith, also known as “Dr. Rush,” has set up a new practice with the Baltimore Ravens as their outside linebackers coach. Head Coach John Harbaugh announced on June 8, 2023. Smith is a former NFL player and has worked as a consultant for several NFL teams, including the Ravens, in 2008.

MARYLAND NEWS

Smith is known for his expertise in pass-rushing techniques and has worked with many NFL players, including current Ravens players such as Tyus Bowser and Jaylon Ferguson. He has also worked with draft-eligible prospects and has been a regular at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Smith’s Background and Coaching Career

Smith played defensive end in the NFL for 10 seasons, primarily with the Atlanta Falcons. He was known for his pass-rushing ability and recorded 58.5 sacks. After retiring from the NFL, Smith began working as a pass-rush consultant and worked with several NFL teams, including the Ravens.

In 2011, Smith was hired as the defensive line coach at Tennessee, where he worked for two seasons. He then worked as a pass-rush specialist for several college football programs, including Georgia, Florida, and Penn State.

Smith returned to the NFL in 2018 as a pass-rush consultant for the New York Jets. He then worked as a consultant for the Ravens in 2021 before being hired as their outside linebackers coach in 2023.

Smith’s Impact on the Ravens

Smith’s expertise in pass-rushing techniques will impact the Ravens’ defense significantly. The team has struggled to generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks in recent seasons, and Smith’s coaching is expected to help improve the pass rush.

In addition to his coaching duties, Smith is also expected to work with the Ravens’ draft-eligible prospects and provide valuable insight into their pass-rushing abilities. The Ravens have a strong track record of drafting and developing defensive players, and Smith’s expertise is expected to help continue that tradition.

The Ravens have talented outside linebackers, including Bowser, Ferguson, and rookie Kwity Paye. Paye was selected by the Ravens with the 23rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and is expected to impact the defense immediately.

Smith’s coaching is also expected to benefit the Ravens’ defensive line.
