Lions maul herder to death at Nairobi National Park

A herder was mauled to death by lions inside Nairobi National Park at about 1am Monday.

Weldon Kirui had been grazing livestock in the Park with seven friends when several lions attacked.

The legs, ribs and head of the 18-year-old were found at the scene, said Langata police boss Elijah Mwangi.

Julius Kimani, Kenya Wildlife Service director general, told The Star the group screamed for help but that it was too late for Kirui.

“By the time KWS officials arrived, the victim had been eaten up. The seven were rescued by rangers who were on patrol,” he said.

The attack took place in the Number 28 area near Maasai Lodge gate.

Nairobi National Park is celebrated as the only park in the world within a capital city where lions, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos and other game roam freely.

Mwangi said Kirui’s friends drove their cattle away but were arrested and detained, and will be charged with illegal grazing.

Kimani warned herders against grazing inside the park and guests against carelessness to prevent attacks.

“Our message, not only to the herders but also to guests in our parks, is that animals are wild. Never venture out or disembark from your cars as you risk being attacked. Stick to the park rules…those violate them risk being penalised,” he said.

“We are going to intensify night and day patrols to avoid such incidents.”
