You have to get married now before it is too late!
I came back from work very late and as I was about to enter my apartment, my neighbour called me and begged me to join in their Family Meeting. I tried to decline because it’s a family meeting and to my understanding, I believe the family meeting should only have family in attendance and since I am not a family member, definitely I am an intruder. However, Philips insisted that my presence will be highly appreciated because of the matter arising. Ok, I went in with Philips and I was curious to know the matter arising.
Philips and his older sister Deborah live together. Their parent came to visit them and in the course of the visit, they started pestering Deborah to get married. The family meeting starts to get heated. Deborah parent told her: “You have to get married now before it is too late.” According to my neighbour’s parent, they said Deborah should get married on time because men are so scarce. Their concern is that if she doesn’t hurry to get married on time, there won’t be a man left for her again to marry so she will be forced to become a second wife or side chick because Women are more than men. I realize that this particular way of thinking has compelled many women into getting married in a hurry and now they feel miserable in that marriage. Also, some men have used this statement to boost their ego and make it sound like they are doing a woman a favour by marrying her because there are lots of women who won’t get a man to marry them.
The discussion in the family meeting made me remember an incidence that happened back then in school. A guy was caught cheating on his girlfriend and when his girlfriend confronted him, he said the girlfriend should be happy because he’s doing the womenfolk a huge favour and that she shouldn’t ever think of leaving him because there are lots of women out there who will welcome him with open arms and at the end of it all, she will be the one to lose at both ends because she won’t have a man in her life. He said “if you stay with me, at least I will guarantee you the first position. You will be my first lady even though I might have other side chicks. Well, you know I have to help the other women who won’t be getting a husband because you women are too much.” What a sick mentality, right? I don’t even know where they got that information from because the last time Women Outnumbered Men in Nigeria was in 1965 when the total population was 50,127,214 (male: 49.96%, female: 50.04%) i.e women outnumbered men by 40,103 and ever since then, men population has been increasing. Today, (2019) Nigeria population is 202,258,207 and men outnumbered women by 2,579,841. (https://countrymeters.info/en/Nigeria)
Are you thinking what I am thinking? Does this mean that over 2 million Nigeria men will be left without a woman to marry them? Like the guy who said he was helping the womenfolk by sleeping around, should women also sleep around and claim that they are helping the menfolk who will be left without having a woman to marry because women are now scarce? Since the table has turned around, should we now embrace Polyandry (a woman takes two or more husbands)? Maybe it’s time to boost women ego too and make them feel like they are doing a man a favour by marrying him? Should a man not leave his cheating girlfriend or wife because he won’t have another woman in his life and he will lose at both ends while there are many men with open arms to embrace his woman? Should we also compel the men into getting married in a hurry so that they won’t become the second husband? If you ask me, just like I said about that guy, I would say the same thing. What a sick mentality, right?
Globally, Men now outnumber women on the planet by 67 million (67, 987,705). This is the highest ever recorded gender difference in the world. (https://countrymeters.info/en/World) Are we to say that 67 million men will remain single and will be unable to have families, in society that favours heterosexual relationship? Are we to say that we will have more homosexual relationship/ marriage?
In conclusion, whatever the case might be, never rush into marriage. Spend time to develop yourself; this is very important because you have a mission (purpose) to accomplish in life. Relax, there is someone for you out there but you will lose that person if you don’t work on yourself first. I am sure you don’t wish to get married today and get divorced tomorrow. Either as a man or woman, surely you seek a happy home; therefore you need to grow up first. Don’t ever think that someone is doing you a favour by marrying you or that you are doing someone a favour by marrying him/her. Get it right! Marriage is not a charity organization. It is for two people to come together in mutual love, understanding and respect. Build your self-esteem, nurture your being, embrace self-love, and become independent so that you will attract someone who will compliment you and not someone to complete you because you are already a full package. I mean, you are a great catch *wink.
