Youth Homelessness Among the LGBTQ+ Community

Youth Homelessness Among the LGBTQ+ Community

1.6 million youth experience homelessness annually, and about 40% of them identify as LGBTQ+.
Homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth are most commonly attributed to familial conflicts.

According to the True Colors Fund, half of the teens who come out as LGBTQ+ to their family get a negative reaction, and 1 in 4 are forced out onto the streets

Leaving home as a minor is often an offense that warrants legal intervention, so many of the youth who are forced from their homes end up in the juvenile justice system.

Involvement in child welfare and juvenile justice system only makes housing instability more likely for these individuals, and due to the criminalization of homelessness, the cycle continues.

What are some of the steps being taken to support LGBTQ+ youth who are experiencing homelessness?

There are several organizations working to provide hot-lines, safe spaces, youth groups, and drop-in centers for LGBTQ+ youth.

Lesley University has compiled a list of resources, along with more information on the issue.
