ByteDance Uses TikTok to Boost Its New Social App, Lemon8.

In the ever-changing world of Social Media Platforms, ByteDance, TikTok's parent company located in Beijing, is apparently working on an interface with another of its applications, Lemon8. Watchful.ai, a product intelligence business, highlighted possible feature development that would enable users to synchronize their Lemon8 postings to Tiktok and augment them with noises and music using TikTok's editor.

Watchful.ai, noted for its ability to predict upcoming app features by combining computer vision, machine learning algorithms, and flow analysis, hinted to this connection while being unable to give visual proof in the form of screenshots. This process has already been used effectively to discover TikTok additions such as the AI chatbot Tako, video stickers, a dedicated Shop feed, and more. ByteDance, on the other hand, has remained tight-lipped and has made no statements on the reported integration.

A Brief History of Lemon8's Adventure

Lemon8, which was launched in March 2020, acquired major momentum in the App Store rankings early in 2023, coincidentally with the time when US politicians considered action against TikTok. It's worth mentioning that Lemon8's popularity seemed to be propelled by force. Numerous TikTok influencers uploaded videos that portrayed Lemon8 favorably, often using similar adjectives and comparing it to a cross between Pinterest and Instagram. Surprisingly, no sponsorship or commercials were seen in these films. Lemon8 was thrust into the spotlight as a result of this planned attention, becoming one of the Top 10 applications in the United States App Store for a few days in March 2023.

According to insiders, ByteDance was encouraging artists to support Lemon8 on TikTok, a tactic geared at fostering the app's early user base and content in the United States. Observers suggested that ByteDance's objective was to deploy Lemon8 as a backup plan, assuring ongoing user involvement in the United States in the event of a total TikTok ban.

Lemon8's Chinese Origins

There's an underlying narrative that casts Lemon8 as a mirror of China's internet environment rather than a new entity. Those who are acquainted with Chinese internet trends would recognize the app's similarities to Xiaohongshu, a prominent Chinese social commerce network with 260 million monthly active users. Xiaohongshu, or "Little Red Book," has become an invaluable venue for young Chinese netizens seeking guidance on a wide range of topics.

Historically, Chinese businesses took inspiration from thriving trends in the United States and then replicated them for their local market. However, as China's digital ecosystem grew, a reversal of this tendency became apparent. Innovative services that were not accessible elsewhere began to grow in China. With Lemon8, ByteDance seems to be exporting this concept, following in the footsteps of TikTok, which learnt from China's Douyin model.

To summarize

ByteDance's relationship with Lemon8 provides insight into the dynamic and strategic realm of social media platforms. While the merging of Lemon8 with TikTok has yet to be formally verified, the move demonstrates ByteDance's intention to expand its worldwide social media reach. Given the present state of affairs, it remains to be seen whether or not this ostensibly cross-posting function will see the light of day.
