Memorial Day on Mindful Monday

Memorial Day, Veterans Day – days set aside for Grilling, drinking and sales – holidays for us to come together as a Nation and reflect on what War is for. To remember John Wayne, who never served, and Jimmy Stewart who did.

Now, with the exception of a few, none of our elected leaders have experienced the sheer terror of combat, the smell of rotten flesh, the sight of severed body parts. For these, war is an abstraction, a John Wayne movie, not to be experienced but to be watched in a comfortable chair. A video game.

My brothers and sisters please, when and if we choose war, let’s do so mindfully, asking would I want my flesh or that of a loved one to be scalded and torn, to feel pain for the rest of my life?

There are so many other ways to achieve our nation’s ideals that are more consistent with them. “Thank you for your service,” and a free meal at The Golden Coral, or an upgrade to First Class, are inadequate ways to make up for the guilt of sending people, even volunteers, to war.

22 vets and active duty are committing suicide every day.

And what have we done with the peace these people have won, besides drinking, grilling, sales and Dancing With The Stars?

Are we less paranoid, less motivated by fear, prejudice and loathing? Have we gladly and eagerly extended our ideals to people of all faiths and colors? Do we now stand up to alternative facts, bold face lies and demonizing one another?

As a nation we have much to be grateful for. We used to know that and act accordingly. We can again. We used to share our ideals and treasure. We can again. We didn’t used to be so mean spirited and tight fisted. Perhaps if we return to living from our inherent generosity, compassion and ideals our plagues of drug and alcohol addiction and even our grid locked political discourse might be managed.
