Accountability

Accountability

Business is not the same as government. There are administrative similarities. But government is about service to all the people, not just to one’s base or to those who contributed to one’s campaign.

Profit, the great measure of business success, has no equivalent in government. Service is not about accumulating more or winning. It’s about compassion, intelligence and giving. It’s not about boosting one’s brand or making money from one’s position of public trust. That’s why honest politicians release their tax returns, divest their businesses or put them into a real blind trust, not one administered by their children.

The Current President of the United States of America, along with many of those that made him President support and serve him now do not understand this. Or, if they do, choose to disregard it. The current President of the United States has served no one and nothing but himself in his entire career. Even in business, he’s had no Board of Directors or stock holders to be Accountable to. He has never had to be accountable to anyone or anything but himself. Being accountable is a humbling, sobering, maturing experience. Not being accountable deprives one of those experiences and leaves one egocentric and deluded about what life and society are about.

The President of the United States, whether he accepts it or not, is not only accountable to all the people, not just to his base and contributors, but to the Constitution, Congress, the Courts and hardest for the current incumbent to swallow – the Press, that enemy of the people, the Media.

Congress, under the control of the President’s party, has spinelessly given up its duty to hold the President accountable to the Constitution and to all the people. The Supreme Court may soon bow down as well. But the Press and the Media, unless their owners like Rupert Murdoch, force them, will not bow down. The Press and the Media continue to hold the President accountable to all the people, the Constitution, and America’s most cherished ideals, and it is right and correct for them to do so. That is why the current President of the United States labels them ‘enemy of the people’. How sad. How perverse. How frightening.

The current President of the United States has no professional experience of being accountable and doesn’t want nor like to be accountable. After all, he’s the winner, he won the election, so it’s done and over. Hail to the chief. But it doesn’t work that way, at least in American democracy. Winning the election is just the beginning. The campaign is over. Now the tough work begins.
