The Presidency of the United States of America has been reduced to a petulant thoughtless tweet.

Two hundred and forty years of history, idealism, striving, failure, guts and glory diminished, reduced to a tweet.

“Give him a chance”, “he won” in no way changes what is happening. In fact, those words deny and enable what is happening.

Government is not business. It’s not even like business.

Daniel Moynihan, teacher, immigrant, US Senator said: “Everyone has a right to their own opinions, but not their own facts.”

Fact: of all those eligible to vote, 49% chose not to. Of those that did vote, the other candidate won. But by a quirk of the system we have a minority government. This is democracy run amok, the very thing the Founding Fathers feared.

Politics has been reduced to a game, a spectator sport, valued less than the Super Bowl. The government of the United States of America is not about which team won and being loyal to your team no matter what. It’s about governing by and for, not the winners or the majority, but for all the people and indeed, all the people of the world. All of them, inclusive. Keeping in mind that these “people” are flesh and blood human beings who can be harmed. Keeping in mind how you would feel if you were among those excluded and harmed.

Who’s responsible for making politics a game with lower ratings than the Super Bowl? Look in the mirror. If you think politics is disgusting, all politicians are scum, and my vote doesn’t count then you’re responsible. The politicians themselves will only change – stop playing games and move the government to where it could be, if we keep after them.

Rise above your disgust and disappointment, partisanship, gamesmanship and ideological extremism and get real! Get your hands dirty, participate! Is government by tweet what you want? Is loyalty to team and leader above all the America you want?
