Career Prospects – SSC CGL Exams

SSC is an organization established under Government of India. Its sole purpose is to recruit staff for various posts of various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and its Subordinate Offices.

SSC is attached to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) .It mainly consists of Chairman, two Members and a Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations.

 

Intro:  SSC conducts examinations for candidates aspiring to get a government job. There are nine regional offices of the commission which contribute to make the entire process possible. The regional offices are situated in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Allahabad, Guwahati and Chennai. Sub-regional offices are located in Chandigarh and Raipur.

 

Branches: Exams Conducted by SSC:

SSC conducts various exams under the categories of CGLE ,CHSL,SI,SO and JE

 

(a) Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGLE) is conducted to recruit for posts of Inspector in IT/Central Excise/Dept of post, SI in CBI, Divisional Accountant, Auditor, Junior Accountant ,UDC and Assistant, etc.

(b) Combined Higher Secondary level examination

(c) Sub-Inspector – (CPO, BSF,CRPF,CISF, ITBP,SSB)

(e) Junior Engineers Examination

(f) SSC conducted exams for recruitment to FCI.

What are the future prospects of the jobs offered?

Examiner

Examiner post is considered to be the best of the categories of CGLE posts. Examiner is the post of inspector. If one is posted in Headquarters, he/she has to deal with Clerical or file related work. First promotion in this job is as Appraiser .It is a Group-B Gazetted office , then Assistant Commissioner, then Deputy Commissioner and Finally Commissioner. One is likely to get promoted after 3 yrs. of service. This post is mainly for coastal regions. It is advised that candidates should consider it as their first or second preference.

 

Income Tax Inspector

An Income Tax Inspector’s work is related to assessment of tax or non-assessment of tax. On an assessment seat he is supposed to see the work related to income tax – assessment- to be imposed on an individual, partnership firm, company etc; and refund in case of excess deposition. Besides accompanying a raid team, he has to see tax deduction at source (TDS) related work. An ITI on non-assessment seat generally has to do clerical work.

ITI is promoted to Income Tax Officer (Group-B Gazetted office), then Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner. One is likely to get first promotion after completing of eight year of service after clearing departmental exam.

He is allotted with a sim from the department for free STD calls on every type of BSNL/MTNL connections. This is an all India posting job.

 

Preventive Officer

The post is that of an inspector. The designated person is expected to do clerical/ file related work in Headquarter but if posted in field eg. In Airport or Coast, he /she will be doing Executive work. The job includes work like assessment of customs duty on goods and prevention of smuggling. They have the authority to arrest, search, seize and detain etc. For them wearing Uniform is mandatory with Ashoka Stambha with 2 yellow strips.

The person is first promoted as Superintendent (Group-B Gazetted office), then as Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Finally as Commissioner. One is likely to get first promotion in this job after completing eight years of service after clearing departmental exam.

 

Central Excise Inspector

Central excise inspector is an inspector post. CEI s posted in Headquarter have to do Clerical or file related work. If posted in  field then he /she have to do Executive work like, detection of evasion of taxes & augmentation of central excise etc. First promotion is as Superintendent (Group-B Gazetted office), then further as Assistant Commissioner, then Deputy Commissioner and Finally as Commissioner. One can get first promotion in this job after completing of eight year of service on the condition of passing departmental exam. Since there is zonal seniority, so promotion period differs from zone to zone. This is an all India posting job.

It is advised that all candidates must fill this post for preference list near preventive officer.

 

Assistant in MEA & Assistant (Cypher) in MEA

Due to foreign posting, a very handsome salary of more than 1 lakh per month and many other facilities like children’s education, accommodation etc, this is the most sought after post under CGLE. Apart from other countries, one can be posted in countries like Iraq, Libya .Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. Officer is given residence in consulate area so there is no need to fear from people in foreign. If one chooses any such countries, he gets 50% more salary and his tenure is counted as double as compare to the normal conditions.

Cyphor Asst. is a little different from Asst. (general). They do coding and decoding of highly confidential language. An Assistant (General) is posted for 3 years in India and 3 years in foreign and like this throughout his tenure whereas an Assistant (Cypher) is posted for 3 years in India and 6 years in foreign consecutively for his entire tenure.

 

Assistant Enforcement Officer

Assistant Enforcement Officer is an inspector post. The job is related to prevention of money laundering, conducting searches. They are authorized to arrest and prosecute the person involved in money laundering, etc. AEO gets promoted to Enforcement Officer (Group-B Gazetted office), then Assistant Director, further Deputy Director and Finally director. There is no fixed promotion period and the chance  purely depends on zone and vacant posts.

 

Assistant CSS

ASS is basically associated with the clerical work like typing, noting and file work. There are two means Assistant in CSS can be promoted to – SO (Group-B Gazetted Officer) -

1)       By passing departmental exam which is held after 05 year of service. So one gets promoted after 6 yrs by this means.

2)      Secondly, one can normally get promoted after 10 years of service.

 

Promotions and pay scales for assistant in CSS:

1. Section Officer – (Group-B gazette Officer) (Grade Pay – Rs 4,800).

2. Section Officer – (Group-A gazette Officer) (Grade Pay – Rs 5,400).

3. Under Secretary – (Grade Pay – 6,600) – Based on performance & available vacancies.

4. Deputy Secretary – (Grade Pay – Rs 7,600)

5. Director – (Grade Pay – Rs 8,700) – Rarely possible for entrant through SSC.

 

Inspector of Posts

Every district has two or more divisions. Duty of Inspector of Posts is to sell Postal Life Insurance and meet the fixed target. This is the least preferred job option offered by SSC in Grade pay of 4200.

It is advisable for Male candidate to apply for this post that too in the last column of interview post while filling SSC post preference.

 

Auditor

Under CAG and CGDA departments, Auditors are recruited. It includes 8 Hours of office job with 5 Days working. In regard to promotion, this job is offered by SSC through CGL. Auditors get first promotion to Senior Auditor after 3 years. Auditors also get the opportunity for the ppst of AAO (Gazette post) after passing departmental SAS exam .this chance is given after two years of service.
