Does the question ‘What Career should I do’? sound familiar. It’s a question that floats in everybody’s head at some stage of their career journey. You ask your friends, family and yourself numerous times entertaining various career pathways but you still get stuck. It feels like you are in a four-wheel drive and suddenly you become bogged in mud! Wondering what career should I do can keep you up at night tossing and turning. Everybody wants to help push you out of the mud but none have the career counselling qualifications or skills to help you. You feel paralysed and don’t know what to do.

Now what? Well, the typical human behaviour is to do nothing. Keep on doing what you are expected to do and move with the crowd. Regardless of what age you are, it is important that you know what steps to take next when confronting change.

Today, more and more individuals want to find purpose and meaning as well as being able to adapt quickly to the changes around them. Individuals want to make a difference with the work they do and want to feel work fulfilment at a deeper level. This is becoming the 21^st century career development dilemma.

To answer the question “What Career Suits Me?” or “What Career Should I Do?” is more complex than it appears. Before you even contemplate the career possibilities available, you first have to start with understanding yourself and your identity. The process of career development helps you do that. The chance to reflect and explore your unique life experiences, values, belief systems, strengths, interests and your limitations provides you with the identity answers you are looking for.
