What Is Burns Night?

So what actually is Burns Night? Burns Night is annually celebrated in Scotland on or around 25th January. It recollects the birth of the Scottish poet Robert Burns who was born on 25th January. 

A Burns Night menu:

Haggis – Love it or hate it, haggis is the symbolic food of Burns Night. Have a peak at BBC’s Good Food guide to buying and cooking the perfect haggis. You don’t have to go to a traditional Scottish butcher to get this Scottish delicacy, you can get your hands on some by looking on the web. Haggis can be baked or boiled and there are now even vegetarian versions to meet the new day and age.

Whisky sauce – Toasting Scotch-filled tumblers is key to Burns Night. Heat double cream in a pan over a medium heat, add a generous amount of whisky and simmer to burn off the alcohol.

‘Neeps and Tatties’ ‘Neeps’ referring mashed turnips and ‘Tatties’ being mashed potato. Combine the two together and you get what we commonly called swede!

Cranachan – Hope you saved some whiskey! This traditional dessert combines cream, fruit. oatmeal and whisky.
