It’s Not Whether You Know Something, It’s Whether You Do It Consistently… Or Not!

Do you do what you know? Do you to it consistently? At the start of many of my talks, I explain how many people spend their time and energy looking for “new stuff” or “advanced stuff” but do not Consistently do what they know.

Most people know what to do, in most circumstances, when they stop to think about it; doing it is often another matter however.

Consistency is one of the keys to success in business and in life. If you want to be fit and healthy, you need to do exercise consistently. If you want a great relationship with your kids, you need to spend time and be present with them consistently. If you want to be a great Leader, you need to work on being a great leader consistently. I could go on as this applies to all areas of life but you already know that.

In my experience, for many people, there is little correlation between the importance of a task and whether people do it consistently. Think about it…

Many people would say that their fitness and health is important to them and they ought to train consistently and yet they are only ever consistently inconsistent… and yet the same person will manage to be clockwork consistent when it comes to going to the pub or watching Game Of Thrones!

Many of the leaders I meet say that having high-performance teams is important to them and they acknowledge that they ought to run regular one to one sessions with their staff but they fail to do so consistently… and yet the same person manages to consistently check their email, hour in hour out, phone in hand.

Many people are gloriously inconsistent and this is harming their businesses, their sales, their fitness, their relationships and their lives.

I have been writing this newsletter since way before content marketing or social media were in vogue. In fact, for the first year or so that I wrote it and my blogs, I had other people (some of whom train content marketing and social media now!!) asking why I gave away so much stuff. They could not understand what I was trying to achieve or why I was doing it.

Then there was the Apprentice phase when I wrote (consistently) a business review of the Apprentice every week (remember that?). This newsletter has always been one of my most important pieces of marketing. There are leaders who have been receiving my newsletter for well over a decade. Every time I write one, I get enquiries and comments. Many people tell me they love it…

And yet, I do not write it consistently. It does not come every week, every other week or even every other month. I know it should be regular. I know it should come at the same time and the same day. I know that you should know when it is coming. And I know that I should be committed to doing that. I should be consistent.

But I am not.

I have no excuses. I have no real reasons. I have no explanation. Not any that would stand up to scrutiny anyway. It is not even like writing takes me a long time. When I have an idea, I write very quickly. At this point, I have been writing less than ten minutes. And yet, still, I am inconsistent.

On top of all of that, I would say that I am a pretty consistent person. Just not in this area. Not in this one area that is one of the most important marketing/keep in touch/relationships building/value adding activities that I do.

It would be funny if it was not so pathetic. And I am not the only one. I see this day in and day out. People failing to do the important stuff consistently. People failing to do what they know they ought to do at the time they ought to do it.

So, today’s message is simple…

What do you need to do consistently? What do you need to do more consistently? How would you benefit if you did? And, how are you going to hold yourself to your new behavior?

I will keep asking myself the same question!

One thing I am very consistent at is delivering value through my keynotes and ‘I am 10’ coaching programme for CEOs/MDs, leaders and high-performance teams. I am currently in Spain for a bit of winter sun but dashed out onto the roof to record a quick video (under 10 minutes) for business leaders on How to Build World-Class, High-Performance Sales Teams. There is no rocket science in this video, only solid strategies and tips that will create more motivated, more focused and more can-do sales teams… if you do them consistently.

You can watch the video here.

Have a great day today and be a ’10’.
