Sex crimes suspect named in Oxnard cold-case murder
A man with a record of sexual assault convictions faces additional sex crimes and murder charges. Police announced the arrest of a man they characterize as a violent predator in a 1980 murder.

According to police, the victim, an 81-year-old woman died en route to the hospital after being sexually assaulted and beaten. The woman lived in her Oxnard home at the time of her death. At the time, investigators collected DNA evidence but the case went cold. Last December, cold-case investigators matched the DNA evidence to a convicted sexual offender. The man had previous convictions for 4 different burglary and sexual assault cases.

The suspect is classified as a sexually violent predator and was receiving treatment at a state hospital following his parole. He could face the death penalty in the Oxnard murder. He could also receive a sentence of life in prison without parole.

The suspect remains jailed without bail. He will return to court on June 3 for a probable cause hearing. In the meantime, investigators continue to seek out witnesses in the case and look for other potential assault victims.
