Historic Savannah, Georgia - a Short Ride from Hilton Head

Considering Hilton Head Island is the furthest southernmost point in South Carolina accessible by car (give or take a few feet) one would think that the Georgia state line is not far away and they would be correct. Actually, the state line is only 5.15 miles off of South Beach in Sea Pines by water. By car, you are looking at approximately a 30-mile drive and about 45 minutes of driving time which is perfect for a day trip to take in the Historic sites of Savannah. You can also travel to between Savannah and Hilton Head Island by boat Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and was founded in 1733 by General James Edward Oglethorpe. nbsp;The design of the city began with 4 ldquo;squaresrdquo; which are open space and the squares were surrounded by residential and civic blocks and the combined layout was called a ward. The squares presented space for colonists to perform militia training, offered strategic defense against invasion and provided a fire break as a reaction to the Great Fire of London to mention a few of their functions. As Savannah grewnbsp;this land plan was implemented and in total there were 24 squares and wards. The city has been dubbed ldquo;Americas First Planned Cityrdquo; and considering the military beginnings it is ironic that the city has also earned the nickname as the ldquo;Hostess City of the Southrdquo;. Today there are 22 squares as 2 were lost to development and 2 other squares were lost but restored, one was restored as recently as 2010. The squares offer large park-like areas and most are adorned with monuments, brick walkways, park benches and historic recognitions. Savannah was recognized in 1966 as one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the country. From River Street to Forsyth Park there are countless historic homes, churches, government buildings and business locations to take in. Each location offers another opportunity to take in the history of the city. Savannah is as well known for its history as it is for the colorful characters that have resided in the city. The book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, written by John Berendt, highlighted many of the interesting characters that lived in the city at the time. It was mentioned in the book that as other cities embraced change and welcomed industry of all kinds Savannah residents liked things the way they were so they passed on progress and offers from large corporations to move to the city. For that, we should thank them. The book offers some great history and the main character, Jim Williams, is responsible for much of the preservation of Savannah. Irsquo;ll leave you with one of the more memorable and favorable quotes from the book which should give you a little insight to Savannahhellip; ldquo;We have a saying: If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, lsquo;Whatrsquo;s your business?rsquo; In Macon, they ask, lsquo;Where do you go to church?rsquo; In Augusta, they ask your grandmotherrsquo;s maiden name. But in Savannah, the first question people ask you is lsquo;What would you like to drink?rdquo;nbsp;- John Berendt,nbsp;Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil Bourbon Oceanfront Homes for Salenbsp;nbsp;Oceanfront Villas for Salenbsp;nbsp;Golf Homes for Sale under $600,000nbsp;nbsp;Bluffton Homes for Sale under $500,000nbsp;
