Australia is Always Open for Citizens and PR, but not Australian Skilled Workers

As of November 2021, the Federal Government allows fully vaccinated Australians to travel internationally without seeking a travel exemption. Certain states also allow fully vaccinated Australian citizens and Permanent Residents to enter the country without undergoing a 14-days hotel quarantine.

However, the Federal Government has not opened the international border for Australian Skilled workers yet. The Federal Government aims to bring back the Australian skilled workers as part of stage two of international border reopening. Hopefully, the plan will be in place by the end of 2021.

How much does Australia rely on Australian Skilled Workers?

Since the closure of the Australian international border in March 2021, Australia has been facing challenging times as they lost most of the Australian skilled workers.

The lack of qualified skilled workers in some fields has resulted in a skill shortage, leaving some companies without the Australian skilled workers they need. Some companies are attempting to attract a limited number of local labourers by providing large salaries and sign-on bonuses.

Stage Two of Australian International Border Reopening

Finance Minister, Mr Simon Birmingham, stated he is hopeful the first phase of international border reopening will be completed soon. Additionally, Mr Birmingham said if the first phase goes well, which we are all hoping so, the Federal Government will move towards stage two, welcoming the skilled workers and international students to the country.

Mr Birmingham did not state the exact number of Australian skilled workers they expect to return to the country. He emphasized the Federal Government is more focused on the quality of ensuring that those who obtain visas for permanent or temporary entry into Australia are truly matching up in terms of the skilled job required by Australian industry.
