WA State Government: International Travel to Western Australia Might be Opened in January 2022

On 05 November 2021, Premier Mark McGowan stated the government would reopen Perth international Travel once the state reached a 90 per cent COVID-19 vaccination rate. The Western Australia State Government predicted the target could be achieved in late January 2022 or early February 2022.

Further information on the transition day to reopen domestic and international travels would be announced after the state reaches the 80 per cent double dose vaccination rate.

Proposed Plan for Perth International Travel Reopen

Mr McGowan stated Perth International Travel would be opened once Western Australians are 90 per cent fully vaccinated. The target might be reached in late January 2022 or early February 2022. The government will further announce the transition day for international travel to reopen once the state gets an 80 per Cent Vaccination Rate.

The State Government will also announce some restriction measures once international travel opens, including the mandatory mask-wearing and various other rules for international travel.

Mandatory Mask Wearing in Certain Places

The government will re-introduce some baseline Covid-19 restrictions for Perth International travel in late January or early February 2022. These baseline restrictions include:

  • Mandatory face masks in “high-risk indoor settings” including public transport, hospitals and aged care facilities;
  • Mandatory vaccination proof to get into nightclubs, casinos and other big events with crowds of more than 1,000 people;
  • Contact registers and the SafeWA app will still be in place at all public venues;
  • Revised COVID-19 event and safety plans will be needed;
  • Entry to remote Aboriginal communities will be restricted where necessary.

The restrictions would be interim and put in place accordingly with the measures, including:

  • Increased use of face masks in other scenarios;
  • Capacity and density limits on businesses and venues;
  • Additional proof of vaccination requirements;
  • Rapid Covid-19 testing at workplaces.

Rules for the Perth International Travel Reopen

Regarding the rules, Mr McGowan stated the government would reopen Perth international travel for all states across Australia. However, the entry rules would still be in place, where all interstate and overseas arrivals must complete a G2G pass.

Rules for interstate arrivals:

  • Travellers would need to be fully vaccinated (received double dose);
  • Return a negative PCR test 72 hours before the departure;
  • Undertake a COVID-19 test within 48 hours of entry.

Rules for Overseas arrivals:

  • Return a negative PCR test 72 hours before the departure;
  • Undertake a COVID-19 test within 48 hours of entry;
  • Quarantine is not mandatory for fully vaccinated international travellers;
  • 14-day quarantine in a designated facility is required for international travellers who are not fully vaccinated.

90 per cent Vaccination Rate to Reopen Perth International Travel

Mr McGowan, on 05 November 2021, stated an additional 250,000 Western Australians should get vaccinated to reach the 90 per cent goal.

Health Minister, Roger Cook, encouraged people in their 20s to be vaccinated, citing the age group’s low vaccination rate of only 45 per cent.

He is also calling this weekend a “super vax weekend”, with pop-up clinics set up across the state, including at eight Bunnings stores.

The first group must be fully vaccinated by the end of the year, while the second group must be fully vaccinated by 31 January 2022. The sooner the Western Australians are vaccinated, the sooner the plan could kick in.

Why must the state Reach a 90 per cent Vaccination Rate?

The Premier claimed that Covid-19 modelling performed for the WA Government suggested that easing border controls by 90 per cent rather than 80 per cent would save the lives of 200 West Australians. Meaning, reopening Perth international travel at a 90 per cent vaccination rate is safer than reopening it at the 80 per cent vaccination rate.

The modelling suggested widespread community transmission would result in far more infections, hospitalisations and deaths if the WA Government eased the Perth international travel at an 80 per cent rate.

Reopening the Perth international travel at a 90 per cent rate would mean:

  • Reducing by 70 per cent of occupied ward beds;
  • Reducing by 75 per cent of ICE beds occupation;
  • Reducing by 63 per cent of the cumulative number of deaths.
