Australia Plans to Open Up New Travel Bubbles in Asia by the Winter

Australian Travel Bubble has become a welcome opportunity for citizens and travelers alike to finally travel abroad. Australia has taken several steps to provide a travel bubble, so Australians and travellers can travel to Australia safely.

The first Australian travel bubble to exist is the trans-Tasman travel bubble, which resulted from an agreement between Australia and New Zealand. On 6 April 2021, the Prime Minister of Australia and New Zealand announced the update for the trans-Tasman Travel Bubble after the Australian Health Minister lifted the travel ban restricting Australian citizens and permanent residents from travelling to New Zealand.

What are the updates for the trans-Tasman travel bubble? And which countries are prioritized for the next travel bubble?

Trans-Tasman Travel Bubble Update

On Tuesday, 6 April 2021, the Prime Minister of Australia and New Zealand announced the trans-Tasman travel bubble would be in operation in less than two weeks. Starting from 18 April 2021 at 11.59 PM Wellington time. Australians will be able to travel to New Zealand without quarantine for the first time.

Australia Prime Minister, Mr Morrison, stated the decision to start two-way travel is an important first step that the borders would be opened before Anzac Day.

The New Zealand government has devised a “traffic light” scheme that specifies certain scenarios that could cause travel disruptions: continue (green), pause (orange), and suspend (red). Additionally, the New Zealand government acknowledged that specific flights to Australia could also be halted if local outbreaks occurred, and both countries maintained the ability to close borders at short notice.

Prioritize Countries in Asian-Pacific for the Next Travel Bubble

After the trans-Tasman travel bubble, the Australian Government plans to approach some Asian-Pacific countries with low COVID-19 Cases. Singapore is mentioned to be the priority after the trans-Tasman travel bubble, but Australia’s vaccination rate could be a problem, as Singapore has suggested it will need “vaccination certificates” to open quarantine-free travel.

Australian Immigration and Health authorities also mentioned other countries such as Fiji, Vietnam and Thailand as the next target as these countries have low COVID-19 cases, as well as Japan and South Korea, although their daily case numbers are higher.

When will the Travel Bubble with Asian-Pacific Countries Commence?

The Australian Immigration and Health authorities stated that they plan to open up the travel bubble within months. Following Singapore, Australia plans to implement quarantine-free travel with other Asian countries with low COVID-19 rates starting in August. It is also pursuing agreements with Pacific nations, with Fiji being a top priority.

What does it mean to you?

The trans-Tasman travel bubble’s headway might indicate that the Australian Government is slowly opening its borders to international travel. The trans-Tasman travel bubble might be the first step for the Australian Government to get back to normality in terms of travel and tourism.

Additionally, the Australian Government is planning a travel bubble with Singapore and other Asian-Pacific nations. Looking at the Australia-New Zealand travel bubble’s current progress, the other Australian travel bubbles with Asian-Pacific Nations are probably soon to come.
