5 Golden Rules For Working As A Catering Assistant

Working as a Catering Assistant can be a tough job, but it’s a great starting point if you are looking to work your way up to becoming a Chef.

However, there are 5 golden rules when working as a Catering Assistant.

You NEED to..

1. Be Flexible
Catering Assistant hours can vary- so it’s important that you don’t mind working early mornings, evenings and weekends! If you have limited availability then it’s very likely that you won’t be offered many shifts!

2. Talk Loudly
The kitchen needs to operate like a well-oiled machine, and communication is key. Kitchens can be loud- so you’ve got to talk loudly in a busy kitchen, so that the Chef can hear you.

3. Be A Team Player
If you work in a kitchen then you must be a team player- it’s constant team work day in day out. There’s no point entering the kitchen if all you don’t like working in a team.

4. Be Cautious
There are lots of dangerous things which live in the kitchen (not the Chef). You have to be careful when working around boiling hot liquids and sharp objects. Make sure you look after yourself by being cautious, such as wearing non-slip shoes! You really don’t want to be admitted to hospital with first degree burns..

5. Be Proud
Everyone has to start somewhere- most Head Chefs have worked as Catering Assistants at the start of their careers. Be proud of your job, and how you can progress in the future by working up the culinary ladder.
