GROW Coaching Model Used By Google’s Managers

Learning from the best is the best way to learn

That’s why when considering the ways to better manage your team, it’s worth looking at the findings of Google’s Project Oxygen.

Project Oxygen is an extensive Manager study, where more than 10,000 bits of information were analyzed, including performance reviews, surveys, and nominations for top-manager awards and recognition to determine the best practices of its most effective bosses. The results of the study led to  8⃣ unique qualities that any great manager has to have (all highlighted in the first part of our video). And the top of the list was being a good coach.

That’s why Google then set out to transform its managers into great coaches. And to do exactly that and to help its managers be consistent, free from bias, and productive during coaching conversations, Google uses the Grow Model.

The Grow model is a simple framework that was developed back in the 1980s by Sir John Whitmore and colleagues to facilitate corporate coaching conversations. Its 4 steps first help you
answer what is it you want to achieve (G-GOAL),
analyze what is happening now (R-REALITY),
given the goal and current reality see what the employee could do or use to improve (O-OPTIONS), and finally
define specific steps that can be taken to ensure the employee accomplishes their goal (W-WILL).

As it’s said, genius is simplicity.  You can now apply this research from Google and the GROW model to immediately start improving your effectiveness as a manager.
