Adding a Panic Room or Safe Room to your home can easily be done without spending a fortune.  That being said, it kind of like buying a car:  you can go the economy route that can get you from point A to point B or you can go the luxury route.  It all depends on “what you feel makes you safe.”  Panic Rooms can protect you from unwanted intruders into your home or office building.  Safe Rooms should have a steel reinforced door, a dual cylinder deadbolt lock (keyed to be opened from either side), reinforced steel door frame (with a minimum 4″ screws), reinforced walls (using concrete, wire mesh, plywood, steel, metal or Armor Core Panels), a phone jack or cell phone kept on a charger, and have no window or skylights.  The Safe Room should be located centrally inside the home and could be used a storm shelter from natural disasters such as tornado’s and hurricane’s (if properly built).

Every family should have a well thought out plan in the event of a home invasion and a Panic Room can easily be added when doing a home remodel.  Give the room a nickname, such as ‘The Alamo’, so that in the event of an emergency you can call out:  ‘ALAMO’ and the entire family knows where to run to.  Putting a price on your family’s safety can’t be accomplished but adding a Safe Room to your home can.–Danny Garcia, owner of Rhino Design Build, LLC in San Antonio, Texas.

There many additional features that can be added to the Panic Room for comfort such as: couches, wireless Internet, food, water, refrigerator, canned goods, self defense items (guns), cell phones, air vents, generator, bedding, first aid kit, personal hygiene items, etc.  Be prepared to have all the essentials required to survive for a few hours or even a few days.  It is extremely important to make sure that you get cell phone and/or wireless service inside the room.  If you surround the room with steel reinforced walls, then the likelihood of you getting cell or wireless service can decrease.  You may want to consider having a modem with a computer or tablet in the room at all times.  There are bullet resistant panels that we can install for the ultimate level of protection.  They can stop up to a .30 caliber bullet.  The door can also be specially made to have the panels inside to prevent gunfire from getting into the room.
