How to Entertain Yourself While Homeless

In our last post, we discussed how it’s possible to work as a freelancer while you’re Homeless. We even brought up how you can use this kind of work to get out of your situation.

You wouldn’t be the first writer or other content creator to use your creativity to get yourself out of a bad situation.

However, life can’t be a 24/7 grind. You need to Entertain yourself on occasion to keep your mind from breaking.

How do you do that? Read on. We’ve got some low-cost ways you can entertain yourself while homeless.

Get Yourself a Kitty

While being homeless is tragic on so many levels, there are ways to make it easier on yourself. One of the best ways is to get yourself a pet.

It doesn’t have to be a cat. It can also be a dog or any other pet that’s relatively easy to manage. Obviously, something like a snake isn’t going to be a good idea. It will freak people out and possibly draw unwanted attention from The Law or other authoritative figures you’d rather not have in your face.

One of the worst parts of being homeless is the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness. While a pet represents an extra cost and certain types of maintenance, they can also save your life. You may feel hopeless. You may hate your life. You may feel like no one in the world loves you anymore.

A caring and loyal pet can completely change your outlook. The love between a pet and its owner is a beautiful thing. As long as you take care of the pet and love it as much as it loves you, you’ll have a companion that will stick with you no matter what.

Pick Up a Hobby

Hobbies can be expensive. Especially new-school hobbies like streaming. And as someone who is homeless, you want to try and be productive even when you need a break from trying to get out of your situation.

Knitting is a great hobby for this purpose. You can create anything from hats to blankets. There are small looms that you can buy at your local Wal-Mart. The learning curve is incredibly small and you can learn pretty much any type of pattern you’d like from YouTube. Some of these looms even come with their own patterns. In less than a day, you can teach yourself to knit on these looms and create a nice hat for yourself.

Another example is biking or other types of exercise.  Exercise is a great way to keep you healthy and happy while you’re dealing with homelessness.

Picking up a jogging routine or biking is not just healthy, but biking can provide you with an alternate source of transportation as well. Joining a gym even has its benefits. You can get in at a Planet Fitness for ten bucks a month. Not only can you stay in shape, but you can also shower there, have a locker, brush your teeth, and other types of hygiene.

Many homeless people enjoy going to the movies. Who doesn’t? This is to break up the monotony of not having anything constructive to do with your downtime. If you want to do more than that, you can write reviews for fun. If you’d like to take it to the next level, then you can always try to post your reviews online or in a local newspaper.

You can also try something that’s family-friendly, like an escape room or board game night. There are lots of gaming stores that offer board game rentals.

Visit the Public Library

The library offers nearly unlimited entertainment when it’s open. You can check out movies, read books, magazine, and even use the internet.

Do you want to teach yourself a new craft? Ready for a career change? It can all start at your local public library.

A book club is a great idea for those of you who would like some human interaction. Every week or month, the leader of the club will select a book, everyone will read it, and then the group will get together to discuss the novel. Sometimes there will be free coffee or snacks. When you’re homeless, you should take advantage of all of the free hot beverages and snacks you can get your hands on.

Some libraries stay open later on in the evening, as late as 8 PM on some nights. Downtime is the enemy when you’re in this situation, so you want to keep yourself as busy as possible for as long as possible.

Volunteer

Volunteer work is one of the most rewarding things you can do. This will also help bring your own situation into perspective.

You can volunteer your time and help others who are also homeless. Not only will this help decrease your downtime, but it also looks great on a resume. On top of all of that, you have the ability to help those who are in need.

This being said, most volunteer gigs are not always easy. It typically requires lifting and moving around. If you don’t have the time or abiliy to get a gym membership, volunteering can help to keep you active and healthy.

Conclusion

Being homeless is scary. It’s tragic. And it’s not fun.

So get out there and find cheap ways to help yourself get through and out of this situation.
