Clutter Really Isn’t That Bad!

A few Days Ago, one of our writers gave a personal account of how minimalism and decluttering changed her perspective on work and life.

Now, someone else on the team has something to say on the matter. I’ll let him take it from here.

Hi. I’m Bob the writer. I’ve been freelance writing for five years.

So far, I’ve fully embraced the wfh lifestyle as well as the writer stereotype. I don’t have a problem with it. In fact, I rather enjoy it. So my post is the counter to what Nancy wrote a few days ago. Let’s go!

Minimalism is a Joke

Nancy said, “People who are super organized always used to make me laugh.”

I still laugh.

I didn’t become a freelance writer so I could spend all of my time picking up after myself. I got into this line of work so I could spend more time doing what I enjoy and living my life however I see fit. I’ve never been a super clean dude and I probably never will be.

I don’t mind clutter. I don’t mind dirt.

In saying that, you probably think I’m filthy. This isn’t the case. I do clean. I just don’t obsess over it. When work hits my inbox, I get it done immediately. When the work dries up for a while, you can find me working on my hobbies or cleaning up around the house.

If you do web searches for minimalism, you’ll find pictures of a bunch of empty rooms with white chairs in them. Maybe a pencil or a single piece of paper. That’s not how I do Office furniture and it’s not how I do life. When I find something that I think is worth hanging on my wall or incorporating into my home decorating, I display it proudly.

Dealing with People

If you don’t like my home, you can leave. I’m not going to listen to you complain about a few pots and pans sitting in the sink or some beer bottles sitting on my office desk.

Do I come to where you work and critique your cubicle set-up? I think not. My time of looking at anyone’s cubicle is long over.

The point is that no one is criticizing how I live and I don’t care about what people think of me or my home office set up. The wfh lifestyle isn’t about the swagger of your work from home office.

At the end of the day, it’s still a job. Your office is still your workspace. Life is supposed to be about what we do when we aren’t working, right? A job is just a way for us to afford a particular lifestyle.

Conclusion

I’m glad Nancy found a way to work and stay focused. Nothing makes me happier than other freelance writers finding what works for them.

I’m lucky. I know what works for me.

I’m living the dream. My happiness is unaffected by how much dirty laundry is on my bedroom floor.
