Office Rant #3

At wfh office, we honestly love what we do. We’re freelancers, after all.

If we didn’t love it then we wouldn’t be doing it.

But sometimes, things really grind our gears. We want a place to rant. It’s our website, so that’s exactly what we’re going to do on occasion.

Today’s rant is about video marketing.

Should We Start a YouTube Channel?

There are many reasons to start a Youtube channel. We found a couple of videos that definitely helped to influence our thinking on the subject.

Here’s the thing. Most YouTubers are in it for the money. And while making money is great, our income is based on the written word.

We’re all about having a home office and most of our content is geared towards Freelance Writers. Why? Because we’re freelance writers. It’s how we make money. Working from home is what we love. So we combined the two and created this website.

Our main concern is that while YouTube may help to grow the site, it’s not going to hit our target audience as often as other channels will. Most freelance writers are going to find us through other means, right? Google searches are how most people look for freelance work and advice.

Granted, there are people who look for videos on how to find work and get into the freelance game, the majority of people are not.

They’re reading blogs and checking out websites like this one. In our experience, writers prefer to read, not watch.

Some of the writers associated with wfh office don’t even own televisions.

Commitments

We’re a busy group of people. Starting up a YouTube channel is going to require a large commitment and it’s going to stretch the resources that we currently have available.

It’s going to mean that we now have to come up with new content strategies. We’re going to have to learn how to record and edit videos.

This isn’t our skillset and creating a channel isn’t going to hit our target audience as well as this website does.

So, unfortunately, we decided to not start a YouTube channel. However, we will continue to embed and link to videos, as we believe they are helpful and are great sources for citation purposes. Often, people can actually see what we’re talking about so they don’t have to just take our word for it.

We may create a new website in the future where this could become a viable content strategy as well as a secondary income stream. For wfh office, it’s just not a good fit.

The Bottom Line

YouTube has changed the lives of a lot of people.

Some folks are even doing it full-time and making a ton of money.

But it’s not what we do. We’re (mostly) writers. We live and breathe writing and we want to help other people achieve the same success we have.

To be honest, we don’t spend as much time on social media as we should, either. And that’s ok. Freelancers are busy people and we get that. They’ll find us when they are ready to find us.
