Cabinet Beds and Murphy Beds, What’s the Difference?

Learn the difference between Cabinet Beds and Murphy beds

Both are great space saving solutions. So what’s the difference? Well, both have unique characteristics to them that could either make them more or less ideal for you based on your specific needs. In this article will cover the advantages and disadvantages of both so you can make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

Murphy Bed Benefits

The term “Murphy bed” is also commonly known as a wall Bed or a hide-away bed. This is where your bed is attached to the wall. This solution saves tremendous space especially if you have a smaller bedroom.

Or perhaps you need a room to function as a home office during the day and a bedroom come evening. Murphy Beds allow you to easily fold your bed up and out of the way and bring it back down whenever you need a place to sleep.

Furthermore, wall beds fit a variety of mattresses. If you’re having comfort issues you can switch to any mattress of your choice.

The best part about a muphy bed is you don’t have to remove the bedding off of your mattress before folding it up. You can simply lift it and everything is hidden away. When you put it back down, everything is in place and ready for you to use.

Downside of Murphy Beds

Does the information above make the Murphy bed a winner? Not so fast. Although there are benefits of having a murphy wall bed; there are also some challenges that come with it. For example, attaching the bed to your wall can be difficult and most often it’s recommended you hire a professional to do the job right. This can add a significant cost to the overall investment of a Murphy bed.

Secondly, after you attach your murphy bed it’s pretty much stuck there until you again hire help to come and relocate it. For those of you that plan to move or just like rearranging and or redecorating from time to time, this solution may not be your best choice.

So before you take the murphy wall bed plunge, ask yourself these questions first:

How often will you use a murphy bed? Daily, once a month or only few times a year when guests visit? If you answered only few times a year, maybe this more expensive solution isn’t your best option.

Cabinet Bed Benefits

If you like how simple Murphy beds are, then you will love Cabinet Beds because they are even more convenient. Cabinet Beds have a much smaller footprint so they take less space in whatever room you put them in. As an independent piece of furniture and you don’t have to attach it to the wall. This saves you the cost of hiring a professional to install it. It also means you can easily move it to any room you’d like.

What makes Cabinet beds even more unique is how well they can blend in with the surrounding furniture in your home. With a rectangular box shape and smooth surface on top, it can be used as a TV stand. Or a place you can display other decorative items such as; photo frames, decorative bookends, potted plants and more. You will be surprised to see how these handsomely designed cabinets can transform into a complete bed in just a few simple steps.

Downside of Cabinet Beds

Despite all the wonderful benefits, if you’re in need of a specific mattress size,  Cabinet Beds typically only come in full and queen size and sometimes Twin. They also must use a 6 inch tri-fold mattress which limits your option of picking a different comfort levels. However, this does not mean tri-fold mattresses are not comfortable. Many of our customers enjoy sleeping on them!
