Staying Comfortable while Traveling

Summer is quickly coming to an end, and the colder seasons are on their way. You know what that means, right? Lots of holiday travel! The best kind of Travel, in my opinion. Mainly because tons of delicious food is involved.

Staying Comfortable during those long flights and hours on the road can be tough. And if you’re traveling with kids and/or other family members, keeping everyone happy can be a struggle.

But never fear, for Bedrooms & More is here. We’ve compiled a few helpful tips to make your travels more enjoyable. Because the holidays should be about love and togetherness (and all that food, of course!), not stress. Follow these rules and we’re sure you won’t feel tempted to turn that car around from grandma’s house.

Beat those travel blues!

Below our are best tips and tricks for your most enjoyable travel experience.

Wear Layers

I travel on planes several times a year. The best advice I can give is to layer up. Seriously. Even if all you do is throw a sweatshirt on over your t-shirt. One of the most uncomfortable feelings is to get settled in your airplane seat and realize you’re freezing. I don’t know what it is about airplanes, but they seem to always keep that AC on full blast, even in winter.

The next least comfortable feeling has to be trekking through the airport to make your connecting flight and realizing you’re drenched in sweat. Again, this uncomfortable feeling can be avoided with layers. Take the sweatshirt off, tie it around your waist, and commence the frantic, oddly exhilarating zigzag dance around other travelers to get to your next gate.

Bring a pillow

And a blanket, if you can.

For a car trip, I find regular-size pillows work best, whereas travel pillows are great for planes. We have many pillow variations on offer both in-store and online, but I do have a few favorite suggestions.

I rarely go anywhere without my shredded latex travel pillow. It helps me sleep so much more comfortably on planes. The fill can be removed to adjust the firmness; who doesn’t appreciate customization? The outer case is also removable, so you can throw it in the wash! We all know airports and planes aren’t always the cleanest places, making this an added plus.

If I’m traveling in a car – and not in the driver’s seat – I always appreciate having a blanket with me. There’s something so cozy about cuddling up next to the car window with a pillow and blanket. The window’s cold from the outside air, but you’re all toasty warm in your makeshift nest.

The 45th Street Bedding washable wool blanket is a great option for road trips, and comes in several different sizes.

Entertainment

You might not immediately think of keeping yourself entertained as a key part of being comfortable. But trust me, being bored and stuck in a seat you can’t get up from is a pretty uncomfortable feeling. Music, audio books, regular books, a portable DVD player, all of these are great options.

This is especially important if you’ll be traveling with children. If you want to keep your sanity, you better be sure you have something for them to do. Books, coloring materials, and family road games are all great options.

Snacks

Being hungry is the worst, so don’t skimp on the snacks when you’re amping up for a long day of travel. Choose foods high in protein and good fats, like nuts and seeds. They’ll keep those hunger pangs at bay while you wait for the airline attendant to make it back to your row with the drink cart.

Other great options include fruit, jerky, dark chocolate, and whole wheat crackers. I like to bring a couple different options when I travel so I don’t get bored of my food, like an apple and dark chocolate bar with almonds. I appreciate options, you know?

But if you’re not into playing the healthy card for your trip, which I definitely respect, snack mix is one of my all-time favorite go-to’s. The different flavors and textures in one bag keep my taste buds interested, and it saves on space!

Whatever foods you choose, don’t forget to bring water. A cheap hack is to bring an empty water bottle with you through airport security and fill it after. You’ll avoid paying for overpriced bottles and be eco friendly. Most airports now are equipped with bottle filling stations. But if not, there’s always a water fountain around.
