Program: Youthful Offender Rehabilitation Program (YORP)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Youthful Offender Rehabilitation Program (YORP) uses evidence-based curricula and cognitive behavioral training and interventions to aid incarcerated youth. The program is designed to meet the needs of the county's most severe and chronic juvenile offenders. Approximately 10% of the juvenile offender population has either failed out of the county's other programs or has committed a level of crime that necessitates an extended period of incarceration.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Reading Specialist will administer the reading portion of the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) to all youth to determine which youth are below grade level and in need of remedial literacy and reading support. The specialist will meet with youth individually to provide literacy and reading support tailored to the needs of each youth. The Reading Specialist will be a collaborative member of the Multidisciplinary Integrated Team including the Program Manager and Probation staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administer the reading portion of the Test for Adult Basic Education within 21 days of admittance into the facility
• Provide literacy and reading services
• Conduct post-assessment and compare to measure progress achieved through literacy and reading instruction services provided
• Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings with Probation and other agency partners.
• Provides direct reading intervention with identified youth.
• Meets with identified youth in small groups each week.
• Select and adapt reading instruction materials
• Assesses youth progress and monitors achievement in reading
• Create and monitor a Library system for the youth

Tailor activities and methods of service delivery to each youth. Activities will enable youth to meet the following objectives depending on their reading level:
o Learn simple sentence and story-reading
o Build basic comprehension
o Learn and apply effective strategies to understand a variety of basic reading selections such as newspaper and/or magazine articles, essays, and short stories.
o Demonstrate and describe comprehension of various reading materials both orally and in writing.
o Use and apply vocabulary learning strategies to enrich vocabularies and grammar for reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
o Identify and describe main ideas within paragraphs and short readings.
o Formulate short responses to assigned readings using clear and complete sentences.
o Write basic summaries to assigned readings.
o Demonstrate and describe comprehension of various reading materials, including news articles, periodicals, poems, and short stories
o Identify and describe main ideas within paragraphs and readings both orally and in writing
o Apply reading and writing skills to prepare for transition to college or workforce preparation.

QUALIFICATIONS

LICENCES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Must possess English Learner authorization (CLAD or equivalent document) AND a valid California Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential OR California Reading Certificate.

• Experience working with or teaching students with school and social adjustment problems.
• General knowledge of the Juvenile Court System
• Methods and techniques for educating students who have documented school and social adjustment problems, behavior management and counseling strategies
• Ability to develop education programs for short-term students

A marine services dive department is looking for a part-time diver to clean and service boats underwater in the San Diego Area. All applicants must have valid driver's license and car, Open Water S.C.U.B.A. certification, your own scuba gear including tanks and weights, regulator and hose, wetsuit, hood, booties, mask, fins, snorkel and hand truck. Potential divers need to be honest, dependable and reliable. They must be organized, have excellent customer service skills, mechanical aptitude, and troubleshooting skills. We will supply/reimburse daily cleaning supplies. You are treated as an employee (not a sub contractor) and pay is per boat. You will set your own schedule for the week once you are acclimated to our schedule and cleaning style. Must have basic computer skills to report in and communicate work.

Required driving to and from marinas. Boat cleaning skills is a plus, but will train to be an underwater hull cleaner. 25% pay per boat during training (if needed), 40% pay per boat for independent work. A trial period will start, then increase to 50% pay. 20-50 per hour. 150-300 per week depending on how well you acclimate yourself to the work. Set your own schedule once past training. • Must be proficient with Microsoft Suite

QUALIFICATIONS

• 1-2 years public speaking/role playing experience
• Must be fluent in English, Spanish speaking not required, but is a plus.
• Must be comfortable wearing a costume
• Must be a motivated, energetic, and happy person who enjoys working w/ kids
and parents.
• Must have reliable transportation.
