5 Reasons to Consider a Career Move

Are you happy in your role?

A simple question that a surprising amount of people don’t ask themselves.

Our feelings of unhappiness at work are often masked by the comfort of daily routine, meaning it’s not always obvious when it’s time for a Career move.

And a lot of people don’t know why they might benefit from a change of roles.

So, what are the reasons you should consider making a career move?

You need a new challenge

Needing a new Challenge is one of the biggest reasons that people decide to change roles.

In fact, 1 in 2 people leave their current role for exactly this reason. But why is needing a new challenge so important?

As humans, facing challenges can bring us a huge sense of joy and fulfillment. And it’s good to have a role that allows you to progress with your skills.

When we no longer feel challenged within our role, it’s easy to get bored and switch off.

If finding a role with new challenges excites you, then perhaps it’s time to consider making the first step towards a career move.

Your values have changed

When you first started out at your company, the likelihood is you were onboard with its values and felt aligned with the company mission.

But, life happens, and people grow.

If you’re no longer onboard with the company mission, or don’t feel any passion for working towards it, maybe it’s time to move to a business better aligned with you and what you believe in.

You’ve outgrown the role/ you’re not progressing

In our Retention Report, we found that 78% of tech professionals considering a career move cited lack of career development or progression as the reason why.

Career progression contributes hugely to our sense of fulfilment and overall job satisfaction.

If you’ve been at your current company for a long time and haven’t had to opportunity to progress, ask yourself if you’ve outgrown your role.

Career progression is important because it gives us something to continually strive for, and when we stop being able to progress, it often means we’re ready to move onto something new.

You have no work/life balance

With the line between work life and home life becoming increasingly blurred, establishing a good work/life balance is more important than ever.

When you’re working from home, it can be hard to separate both areas of your life.

But it’s important to work for a company that allows a healthy balance and respects your boundaries.

If you find yourself working in a role that offers little flexibility or respect for your personal time, this could be your prompt to make a career move.

You’re not excited by your role anymore

Inevitably, the excitement of starting a new job is bound to wear off, and the longer we stay with a business it’s natural to have some decline in excitement.

But if you’re in a role you truly enjoy, you should always feel excited by the next big project or the path the business is taking.

If you’ve completely lost the spark and no longer feel excited about what you do, maybe it’s time to make a career move.

So, are you happy in your role?
