Keeping up with what seems to be mountains of documentation, RAC audits, Medicare and the ACA (Affordable Care Act) changes can certainly shift ones Attention from patient care to paper care.
The truth is your patients do not notice the morass of complexity you go through to get their treatment approved. What the patient does see is the distracted clinician who has less time to spend with them. You don't think that they notice?
Of course they do... and they tell their friends.
At the recent PPS Conference in New Orleans, I noticed clinicians very busy checking out the various EHR software and billing service vendors and many of them with a look of fear on their face.
They are sometimes in over their head, not knowing what is to come and hopeful that the company they are speaking to can help their company Protect itself against an audit, a review or worse. It is what I call "Effect Practice Management."
Effect Practice Management is simply an overwhelming focus and attention on protecting what you got against outside and Governmental Interference and change. I am not an idiot, I too have to be aware of governmental interference in my own company and protect it as well.
Unfortunately, by creating confusion in the healthcare system it shifts the practice owner's attention from actions that grow their practice to actions that only protect it against attacks.
