How Does Underfloor Heating and Cooling Work?

Underfloor Heating systems provide cost effective and energy efficient heating throughout the cold months but then can also offer underfloor cooling for the warm summer months. It provides you with a floor system that makes your home comfortable for you to enjoy all year round.

An underfloor cooling system works by transferring energy by radiant heat exchange. The radiant heat refers to when warmth is passed to cooler objects so when the floor is cooled to a temperature colder than the nearby air, the floor absorbs radiant energy in accordance with the temperature difference between the surface and the room.

Under Flooring heating on the other hand passes warm water through the pipes in the floor structure before transferring it to the floor’s surface. This allows for the entire floor temperature to be maintained at the same warm temperature. Whereas radiator systems would concentrate heating in one area before the heat moves across the whole room, an Underfloor Heating system ensures heat is evenly distributed throughout the room offering maximum energy efficiency.

Underfloor cooling can help you save money on your energy bills as it is cost effective. It allows different rooms to be at different temperatures so that no energy is wasted in the rooms you aren’t using. For underfloor cooling, ground source or air source heat pumps complement the systems well when it comes to providing water for the underfloor heating pipes in the summer.

Unlike an air conditioning system which forces the air over a cooling element, underfloor cooling systems can pass chilled water from a ground source heat pump or air source pump.

These systems mean that you can also save space in your home as there are no conventional radiators or air conditioning systems taking up valuable wall or floor space.

If required you can control your systems when you’re not home via your thermostat and smartphone.  As long as your flooring remains intact, your underfloor heating and cooling systems should last for over 25 years.

At Ramki our aim is to help you reinvent your living space with smart and exciting systems. So we offer a variety of innovative, eco-friendly radiant heating alternatives including ceiling, wall and floor solutions. This allows for cooling and heating all in the same system making them very efficient low-temperature systems.

All of our wall, ceiling and floor systems can be retrofitted to suit any space. Regardless of if you are just refurbishing your home, remodelling or you are building new, we can design, service and install the right option for you and your property.
