What is Solar Battery Storage?

Whether you already have Solar panels installed and you are wanting to really reap the rewards of renewable technologies, or you are contemplating whether it is worth installing solar battery storage alongside your new solar installation, we are here to help you to distinguish exactly what is solar battery storage?

Solar panels create energy when there is daylight which you can use instead of buying it from an energy supplier. When you generate electricity with a solar panel system you can store the extra energy in solar battery storage to use when you need it. Having a solar battery system enables you to rely less on the national grid and become more self-sufficient.

Adding solar battery storage to your solar pv system is a great way to get the most out of renewable energy solutions. They work by storing your excess energy that has been produced from solar panels during the day, so that you can use it later on in the day or into the evenings. How much you will save from using solar battery storage differs from household to household as everyone uses energy at different times of the day. Although storage systems can range from £1,200-£6,000, when you become more self-sufficient you are also protecting yourself from rising prices from energy suppliers.

Currently in the UK there are two solar batteries that are widely available- lead acid and lithium-ion batteries. Although lead-acid batteries are normally cheaper, they are not as efficient and have a shorter lifespan. On average solar batteries will last for around ten years so it is likely that you will need to replace the battery in the lifetime of your solar panel system, however this is dependent on the type of battery you have, the usage and the maintenance. Battery storage for solar energy are designed to be wall or ground mounted and are usually installed in your loft, garage or under stairs.

Although solar panels work without battery storage, they do enable you to become more environmentally friendly as you will be able to use more of the energy that is generated in your home instead of exporting it back to the national grid. You will also save extra money, on top of the money that you are saved from using a solar installation. There could also be an opportunity to be paid by firms who will pay you to store excess grid electricity in your battery.

The average home uses around 8kWh of electricity per day and the capacity of many lithium-ion batteries go between 1kWh up to 15kWh. You will need to consider how much your solar panels will generate too. This is because you need a battery that matches your home’s energy use and the amount of energy your solar panels generate. If you already have solar panels installed, it is important to take into account whether you are generating enough electricity that you don’t use to see whether home battery storage is worthwhile.
