Problems Managing Church Heating

After spending £200,000 giving the Church and hall a much needed facelift, the parish of St Andrew’s in Sudbury soon found themselves host to a variety of new and exciting activities. A nursery, scout troop and dance class moved into the hall, and it soon became clear that the existing time clock and thermostat combination wasn’t up to the task of juggling all the different Heating requirements. Amid growing energy prices, and an inflated gas bill, the parish decided to tackle this growing expenditure to free up money for further improvements.

Echome engineers surveyed the church for free, and suggested a mini-BEMS (Building Energy Management System) would reduce gas consumption by 20-30%. The intelligent controller combines proven boiler optimisation processes and straightforward management software to ensure the boiler works to maximum efficiency and only when necessary. The system also uses a number of sensors and smart heating algorithms to improve the indoor environment for the children in the nursery (where regulations stipulate a minimum temperature of 19 degrees celsius).

Following advice from Brian Cuthbertson, the head of environmental challenge, at the Diocese of London, The Reverend Felicity Scroggie moved quickly to have the system installed, and is “very happy indeed” with the new streamlined approach to managing the heating. The installation took 2 days and the church are already enjoying the 25% energy saving the BEMS achieves by automatically refining heating patterns. The fact that the church and nursery management can now set up a 365-day heating calendar and control the heating from a home computer or smart phone has also made looking after the site a good deal easier.
