Spare Parts Policy for Garage Mechanics

Garage operators will have to offer used spare parts to their customers as of 1 January 2017. Initiated under the Energy Transition Law, the measure is expected to result in significant savings.

It is a measure that should reduce the maintenance bill. Effective January 1, 2017, garage owners will be required to car accessories if requested by the customer. This new provision is part of a decree signed Tuesday in the framework of the Energy Transition Law by the Minister of the Environment and published in the Official Journal.

The decree provides that ‘A professional who markets maintenance or repair services for passenger cars and vans […] allows the consumer to opt for the use of spare parts from the circular economy instead of New parts … “. These include removable body parts, non-glued glazing, optical parts and some mechanical or electronic parts such as motors, gearboxes and transmission components.

In a statement , the Ministry of the Environment states that “this decree will allow the professionals to propose parts dismantled in the 1700 approved end-of-life vehicle treatment centers, the quality of which has been verified beforehand”. As stated in the decree, this new provision is part of logic to promote the circular economy, which consists of limiting the consumption and the waste of raw materials. These rules are also applied on the bike accessories like bike helmets, tiers etc.   A model “favorable to the purchasing power of households because of their attractive selling prices,” notes the Ministry of Environment.
