Introducing Byju Raveendran, Finalist of the 22nd EY Entrepreneur of the year 2020

The EY Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) program was launched to celebrate the entrepreneurial ingenuity, share inspiring stories and recognize achievements of budding entrepreneurs. This program recognizes exceptional people who create products and services that propel local and global economies forward. Marico chairman Harsh C. Mariwala was named the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2020 who will represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award (WEOY) in Monte Carlo from 4 – 7 June 2021.

The 14 Finalists were selected by an eminent eight-member independent Jury Panel led by Uday Kotak, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kotak Mahindra Bank. 

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of India’s largest ed-tech company, Byju Raveendran was one among the 14 finalists including several unicorns. An entrepreneur by chance and a teacher by choice, he started BYJU’S with the vision to help students and change the way India learns.

About the Finalist

He is born to teacher parents in Azhikode in Kerala. Byju is an avid sportsperson and believes that children can learn a lot outside the classrooms by playing multiple games. The founder is passionate to create self-initiated and life-long learners through his brand.

He started BYJU’S classes in 2008 which became a household brand due to his unique teaching style and focus on learning. With the aim of reimagining learning from its roots, Byju harnessed the power of technology to reach out to the K-12 segment of students across the country.

Professional Accomplishments

In 2011, Think and Learn Pvt Ltd was incorporated with focus on the school (K-12) space. The real breakthrough however, was in 2015 with the launch of the BYJU’S – The Learning App which has seen tremendous engagement – with 80 million registered users and reach of over 1700 cities and towns in the country so far.

Awards Won

Byju Raveendran is the recipient of Forbes Entrepreneur of the year (2020-21), Bloomberg Businessweek 50 List (2020), Fortune 40 under 40 List (2020), Manorama Newsmaker of the Year Award (2020, 2019), IMPACT Person of the year (2019), the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the year award-Startup (2018), Fortune 40 under 40 Award (2018), CNBC Young Turk of the Year (2017) and Express IT Newsmaker of the Year (2017).

He is one among the EY finalists who also reported significantly stronger financial performance in times when global and domestic economic growth rates have been stagnant.14 Finalists including Unicorns and a Decacorn have combined revenues of INR 52,000 crores and are providing employment to more than 1,10,000 people. 

Social Responsibility

Byju announced the launch of its social initiative – Education for All. The program aims at democratizing education by ensuring that children across all economic backgrounds get equal access to quality learning opportunities. BYJU’S made its learning content free for school students during the lockdown period and since then it has seen over 20 million new students learning from its platform for free. Today 64 million students are learning on the platform.
