Darius Jamal Young, a Professor of History and African American Studies at FAMU, has been selected as one of the Inaugural Hbcu Faculty Fellows by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS).
This prestigious fellowship recognizes Young's outstanding contributions to scholarship and his commitment to advancing the humanities and interpretive social sciences. As one of only eight recipients nationwide, Young will receive an award of up to $50,000 to support his research for his upcoming book titled "Freedom Now!: Detroit and the Black Revolt of 1963."
Young's research focuses on a pivotal moment in American history, exploring the dynamics of the civil rights movement and the Black struggle for justice and equality. His forthcoming book promises to shed new light on the significance of the Detroit uprising of 1963 within the broader context of the African American freedom struggle.
The ACLS is dedicated to promoting excellence in humanities research and scholarship, particularly among faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). By providing resources and support to exceptional scholars like Young, the ACLS aims to amplify the voices and perspectives of HBCU faculty members in academic discourse.
In addition to the individual fellowship award, FAMU will also benefit from the fellowship program. ACLS will provide a $2,500 grant to the university, earmarked to support humanities programming or infrastructure. This investment underscores ACLS's commitment to strengthening humanities education and research at HBCUs.
